ampR is the gene conferring resistance to the antibiotic ampicillin. Ampicillin is used to select for bacterial colonies that have been successfully cloned. Without ampR, both successfully cloned and unsuccessfully cloned bacterial colonies will fail to grow if the selection medium contains ampicillin.
