During an infection, the rate of proliferation of lymphocytes within the nodes is so great that the nodes enlarge and become tender. Edema may be present, but the tenderness is due to prolifera-tion of lymphocytes and is a normal function of the nodes. The tenderness is not due to the mi-croorganisms.
