There is a genetic basis to high cholesterol, but lifestyle modification can compensate for many of the increased risks. LDL is more deleterious to health than HDL, and diabetes contributes to high cholesterol but not necessarily vice versa. Hypercholesterolemia resulting from other factors is secondary rather than primary.
