As a manager, you must be as knowledgeable as the well informed woodman. Understand the present relationships among competitors, customers, suppliers and regulators, and identify new relationships. Find out what you don't know there.

Comprehension skills  require that the manager first know the body of knowledge in the industry, must possess an awareness and understanding of the key elements of the task environment and how organizations in the environment interact with each other to produce events likely to impact the firm. Managers must develop their cognitive and perceptual skill to the fullest.

Analysis skills  require that skills mangers must have the ability to see through the tremendous amount of information in limited time and determine if any patterns or similarities emerge. The more knowledge the manager has about the industry, the easier it becomes to identify these emerging patterns.

Synthesizing skills  require that the manager be able to take the key observations or patterns that have been emerging and try to make sense out of them in terms of a larger, more integrated identification of the forces driving change.

Use content analysis to reduce the tremendous amount of information available; group the information in to themes and units of analysis; check the frequency and degree of importance through the amount of space and time given by the media to the themes and units of analysis.

Use concept mapping to map the most important themes or patterns.
Discuss the example of the growing influence of the capital market community in order to understand concept mapping

Use matrix analysis to understand the cause and effect relationships.

 null- wait for information

 reactive  respond to incoming information
non-routine  seek information as a result of a problem or opportunity
 routine  share and communicate effectively

proactive  build on the routine mode with a futuristic look to the environment, make good use of the information for planning

Validity refers to fact that the information accurately represents and describes the relationships that are necessary to make important strategic decisions.

Information from a variety of sources is similar, suggesting a pattern is present.

Reliability refers to the need for accuracy and consistency over time.

The manager should carefully choose information sources in this electronic age.
