(Answer to Q. 1)  ANS: C
To overcome the limitations of estimating formulas, energy needs can be measured at the bed-side. To do so, a procedure called indirect calorimetry is used.

(Answer to Q. 2)  ANS: C
Of course, energy needs vary according to activity level and state of health. Energy needs of sick patients can be significantly higher than predicted normal values. Energy needs for obese indi-viduals are less because adipose tissue uses less energy than does muscle. Energy needs should be reevaluated and adjusted whenever weight changes more than 5 to 10 lb.

(Answer to Q. 3)  ANS: A
Obtained after 10 hr of fasting, the BMR measures the number of calories (kcal) expended at rest per square meter of body surface per hour (kcal/m2/hr).

(Answer to Q. 4)  ANS: C
Specific clinical conditions supporting the need for indirect calorimetry as a tool in nutrition as-sessment are listed in Box 23-4.
