Promotion research is a specialized form of marketing research that focuses on the development and performance of promotional materials. When research is used to make important promotional decisions, marketers need to consider whether that research meets four basic criteria: reliability, validity, trustworthiness, and meaningfulness.

A reliable method generates consistent findings over time. A valid method generates information relevant to the research question. The research investigates what it set out to investigate. Trustworthiness is related to knowing how the data were collected and to what extent the data can be trusted. This term is usually applied to qualitative data. Meaningfulness is perhaps the hardest criteria to respond to. This criteria asks what the research and data really mean and or, or if, it can be useful to the marketers objectives.
