Grapefruit and grapefruit juice contain a compound that can interfere with the metabolism of many drugs, allowing the drugs to build up to undesirable levels in the blood. Most drug labels state, Take on an empty stomach, which helps reduce the risk of this type of interaction.

Many young children do not play outside as much as children did in the past. They tend to watch more TV or play video games indoors. This reduces their exposure to the sun and so their skin makes far less vitamin D precursor.
Many young children do not drink as much milk. This could due to a variety of factors: (1) Milk is more expensive than in the past, so children may drink more soda or sweetened drinks in place of milk. (2) Many children may be lactose intolerant and do not eat or drink foods that are good sources of vitamin D.

Answer to #5

The elderly don't often get enough water in their diets. Their ability to detect thirst is reduced as they age and they may become confused or disoriented as a result of dehydration. Older adults should drink 9-11 cups of water each day.
Many elderly do not absorb vitamin B12 well as a result of a reduction in stomach acid and intrinsic factor that occurs with age. This can result in anemia and lethargy that could be mistaken for another condition. Some people may need to get injections of vitamin B12 or large doses of vitamin B12 by mouth to ensure adequate levels in the body. There are other nutrients that could be deficient in the elderly person's diet as well.

Answer to #7

Parents can be present and can provide the adolescents with handy, nutritious foods such as whole-wheat crackers, cereals, fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, or cheese sticks for a quick snack that does not supply excess calories. The parent can also discuss with the adolescent the nutritional value of foods. Conditions such as PMS or acne may have a dietary component and may be helped by the addition of nutritious whole foods to the adolescent's diet. Parents are a key influence on an adolescent's beliefs and behaviors.
