Gene mining directly looks at the genes present in a sample such as a marine water sample. A metagenome is constructed and is screened (or mined) for a particular phenotype of interest. This process circumvents culturing unknown microbe issues, and with a screen developed can be a powerful and cost-effective approach to identify novel products such as antibiotics produced by specific genes found in an environmental sample.
