If Canada's population were to start declining in the next few years, would this automatically translate into a lower ecological footprint for the average Canadian? Explain.

a) explain how our population can still be growing when the birth rate has been about 1.6 children per woman since the 1980s (2 marks) b)list two factors that likely contribute to canadas relatively low birth rate has been about 1.6 children per woman since the 1980s ( 4 marks) c) if canadas population were to start declining in the next few years, would this automatically translate into a lower ecological footprint for the average canadian. explain your answer (2 marks)

a) births + immigration > deaths + emigration.
Guess what? Lots of people who were born before the 1980s aren't dead yet!

b).
1. Availability of contraception. Duh.
2. Delaying having children because of postsecondary education, then because of building a career, then because of waiting for financial security, then because of divorce...

c)Not likely. Each person in every country is responsible for his own ecological footprint. How much gasoline do we use, what kind of car do we drive, how many harmful substances to we fail to recycle..this and many other examples are up to the individual. Even if your population as a country declines, each citizen is still responsible for the size of his own ecological footprint.
