Assume that under ideal conditions bacteria divide every 20 minutes,
doubling their numbers. Starting with a single bacterium under these
circumstances, how many would there be after two hours? Four hours? Eight
  hours?

What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

If bacterial colonies grow so rapidly, why dont we see them everywhere? Why
havent they crowded out other forms of life?

What will be an ideal response?

Question 3

Bacteria need both food and water to survive and reproduce. What provided
these to the bacteria in your experiment? Do you think dairy products might
provide a good source of food and water for bacteria to grow?

What will be an ideal response?

Question 4

What are some possible explanations for your results? If you had unexpected
results, what might have happened to contaminate your samples of potato?
(Hint: Is the raw milk the only source of bacteria in the experiment?)

What will be an ideal response?

Answer to #1

Two hours: 48 bacteria; four hours: 3,072 bacteria; eight hours: 12,582,912 bacteria

Answer to #2

Conditions are not always favorable for bacterial growth. Growth is limited by many
factors.

Answer to #3

The potato provided a source of nutrition and water. Potatoes are a rich source of
water and nutrition; therefore, they provide a good medium for bacterial growth

Answer to #4

Bacteria are present on all surfaces and in the air. The untreated potato could have
been contaminated very easily from any of these other sources.
