Mortimer Adler first advocated for using Socratic pedagogies in modern K-12 classrooms to support democratic schooling. He argued in his books, Paideia Proposal (1982) and Paideia Problems and Possibilities (1983), that education should be rooted in three goals: (1) the acquisition of knowledge, (2) the development of intellectual skills, and (3) the enlarged understanding of ideas and values. The use of the Socratic Seminar model supports teaching and learning within American schools by doing all three. (From What Are the History and Origins of the Socratic Seminar Model?)
