The five components of effective teaching philosophies include statements regarding your conceptualizations of learning, where your beliefs about how children learn and develop are stated. In addition, your conceptualizations of teaching include descriptions of how you can support the learning and development of children within your context. Your goals for children and families include statements regarding the knowledge, skills, and dispositions you work to support, and how you will implement your philosophy reflects how your concepts of teaching and learning and goals for children and families are translated into action. Finally, your personal growth plan identifies your professional journey to date, your present and long-term goals, and your plans for achieving these.

Access strategies supporting professional preparation include flexible work hours to pursue education. In addition, partnerships with local training and education agencies to support continued education are important and can include such strategies as offering educational programming at the early childhood program site. Online, evening, and weekend training opportunities support access to courses and professional development systems that include articulation allowing professionals to transfer from one program to another without repeating previous education are also critical. It is essential that the professional preparation training courses offered are of high quality and that monies are available to support professional development.

The High/Scope Curriculum was a component of President Johnson's efforts to reduce the impact of poverty on developing children. The curriculum was launched in 1962 under the leadership of David Weikart to serve children considered developmentally at risk in impoverished neighborhoods in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Weikart and his colleagues developed High/Scope, as there was no existing curriculum that they felt adequately supported children.
