The Ti plasmid in nature is housed within the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which transfers genes within the Ti plasmid to infect and cause disease called crown gall in plants. The Ti plasmid can be easily manipulated, to contain other genes that produce herbicide resistance and insecticides, and transferred into agricultural crops.
