Type I methanotrophs use the ribulose monophosphate pathway that does not require NADH reducing power. Type II methanotrophs require 2 NADH for every 1 CH2O used in the serine pathway. The type II methanotrophs generate an acetyl-CoA from CH2O and CO2. The serine pathway also requires 2 ATP, whereas the ribulose monophosphate pathway uses only 1 ATP and 1 G3P. Consequently, the cell growth is higher in type I methanotrophs.
