Answer to #1

First, recess provides the opportunity for students to exercise and blow off steam. And, lack of recess has been linked to childhood problems ranging from obesity to anxiety and hyperactivity Second, free play during recess also provides students with opportunities to interact with others that can contribute to cognitive, social, and emotional development. Time is the reason schools have cut back on recess. Many schools feel pressured to improve scores on high-stakes tests, so they allocate extra time to the areassuch as reading and maththat are covered on the tests, and the extra time often comes from recess.

First, cognitive factors exist. Alcohol and drug abuse decreases academic achievement. For example, research has identified a link between long-term marijuana use and lowered IQ. Second, students who abuse alcohol and drugs place themselves at risk for problems such as damage to their health, car accidents, and even suicide. And third, alcohol and drug users are less likely to exercise, and they're less likely to develop healthy mechanisms for coping with life's problems.

Guidelines for promoting moral development in classrooms include: 1) Model Ethical Thinking, Behavior, and Emotions in Interactions with Students, such as Rod Leist's simple brief apology for interrupting the discussion, which modeled obeying classroom rules; 2) Use Moral Dilemmas as Concrete Reference Points for Examining Moral Issues, such as Rod using the lost wallet as a concrete reference point for discussion; 3) Use Discussions to Help Students Understand and Respect the Perspectives of Others, such as Rod leading the discussion of what to do with the lost wallet; 4) Use Classroom Management as a Vehicle for Promoting Moral Development. As we've seen throughout the chapter, classroom management can be used to promote much more than an orderly classroom, and Rod's management system is an illustration. For example, he stopped Helena's interruption and reminded the class that they agreed to let people finish a point before speaking.
