A person with two mutated alleles for the MC1R gene makes more reddish than brownish melanin, resulting in red hair. DNA from two Neanderthal fossils contains a mutated MC1R allele that has not yet been found in humans. These data best support the conclusion that:
.Neanderthals had red hair.
.Neanderthals did not have brown hair.
.Neanderthals had a variety of hair colors.
.Neanderthal MC1R allele was less active than unmutated MC1R.
