                          Assimilation or Accommodation?
i.   Even though newscaster referred to the first plane crash on 9/11 as an “accident” when the second plane hit, people were forced to accept that this was not an accident but intentional.

ii.   A child learns his father is called Daddy, so he calls other males ( e.g. the mailman) Daddy.

iii.   When he first saw a raccoon, Edgar called it a dog, but Edgar’s mom tells him it is a raccoon.  Now Edgar can identify a raccoon.

Assimilation of knowledge occurs when a learner encounters a new idea, and must “fit” that idea into what they already know. Think of this as filling existing containers. Accommodation of knowledge is more substantial, requiring the learner to reshape those containers. You can think of these containers as “schema.”
