For sound to travel, an atmosphere is required so that the soundwaves have a medium (air molecules) to bounce off of. The atmosphere on the moon is so thin, it's barely even there! In the moon's atmosphere, there are only 100 molecules per cm3. In comparison, Earth's atmosphere at sea level has about 100 billion billion molecules per cm3.

Hence, a sound recorder would likely not register any noise on the moon.
