Multiskilled workers have been cross-trained to perform more than one function, often in more than one discipline. Examples include a housekeeper cross-trained to perform basic maintenance and repair duties, a nursing assistant learning to draw blood and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis, a unit secretary learning to admit patients and process bills, and a maintenance worker acquiring carpentry skills. Multiskilled workers tend to be highly productive. They can provide more services than individuals working independently and can enhance convenience for patients. They bring versatility and flexibility to the staffing plan, and they save the company some money in labor costs.
