The well-being of African Americans in the early 20th century was worse than any time since the end of slavery. Discuss the Supreme court ruling in 1896, Jim Crow Laws and the populist revolt of the 1890s in creating this situation. Give the specifics of each and how it limited African American power and well-being. What actions in modern time parallel any of these actions from this time period and what is the impact?

Students can use the textbook, as well as outside references, to highlight these 3 areas and ways they limited African Americans from improving their status at the time. Examples of this currently are gerrymandering to limit how voting takes place in certain areas. There are also voter ID laws and voting restrictions due to criminal history. The Trump campaign ran on a populist platform. Many executive orders from President Trump seek to limit protects for minority groups, as well as the focus of the Attorney general's office being unfavorable to African American needs.
