Onnie Lee Logan (1991) described the role of midwives in low-income African American communities in the South. The tendency for midwives to also help with cooking and washing suggests:

▸ midwives were usually mothers or sisters, so they would be doing the cooking and cleaning already.

▸ the mothers often came from a more privileged background than the midwives.

▸ midwives were committed to supporting women in their community during a busy and stressful time in whatever way was necessary.

▸ mothers in these communities were too young to cook and clean properly themselves, so midwives had to teach them these skills.
