Many of these machines have patented technology that couldn't easy be incorporated into smartphones without paying a loyalty to the credit card companies. There are addons that can be used, however, such as the square reader. See the link below:

To use this, the seller has to pay 2.65% per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and international credit cards. Therefore, to use your smartphone for this reason, the best you can do is pick up a portable card reader to take credit card payments anywhere you can get an internet connection.
