Why has the diverse group of protists traditionally been grouped together?

They all have the same type of nutrition.

They are not prokaryotes, fungi, plants, or animals.

They all have very similar shapes.

They all have very similar DNA sequences.

The answer will be "They are not prokaryotes, fungi, plants or animals". Other options don't comply with the nature of protists. As the question implies, protists are a very diverse group of organisms e.g. their method of nutrition varies, they are of different sizes and their genome varies widely too.
