The group number tells you the number of valence electrons an element has. Depending on the group number, you can tell whether an atom needs to lose or gain an electron. The closer to the left of the period table, the more likely it needs to lose an electron to stabilize, while the ones to the right more likely gain electrons to complete the outer octet in their valence shell.
