In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation that allows eligible Canadian adults with grievous and irremediable medical conditions to request medical assistance in dying (MAiD). The individual must be capable of making that decision. MAiD is a complex moral and ethical issue and one that is especially challenging for those who are in the mental health care field. Is mental illness a grievous and irremediable medical condition? Should Canada provide access to MAiD for mental illness as a sole underlying condition when, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, one-third to one-half of Canadians with mental illness are not getting their needs met in the current healthcare system? Fully explain your position.
