Nosocomial infections are those acquired by patients and staff while they are in health care facilities, including hospitals, dental offices, nursing homes, and doctor's waiting rooms. Over 2 million people acquire nosocomial infections each year. There are many types of nosocomial infections:
1. Exogenous infections, which are infections caused by pathogens acquired from the health care environment.
2. Endogenous infections, in which normal microbes become pathogens as a result of factors within the health care setting.
3. Iatrogenic infections, which are the direct result of modern medical procedures such as the use of catheters, invasive diagnostic procedures or surgery, or antibiotics.
