The amplitude of an action potential is independent of the amount of odor molecules or odorants that produced it. In other words, many odor molecules or odorants do not necessarily create larger action potentials. Therefore action potentials associated with olfaction are said to be all-or-none, since they either occur fully or they do not occur at all. Instead, the frequency of action potentials is what encodes for the intensity of a stimulus. This is in contrast to receptor potentials, whose amplitudes are dependent on the intensity of a stimulus.
