Livestock include things like farm raised pigs, cows, etc. that are raised to eventually be slaughtered for profit. In selective breeding, humans intentionally choose individuals with desirable traits and breed them to produce offspring with those desired characteristics. For example, if a certain group of cows produce superior milk, only these cows will be selected by the farmer to breed. This reason this method is effectively is because, unlike natural selection that is solely based on the availability of food, predation pressure, climate, and competition for resources, selective breeding can produce significant changes within a relatively short period. Natural selection also assumes no human intervention; that is, it is driven by environmental factors and the survival advantages conferred by certain traits.
