Tranquilizers are effective for mild anxiety, but they are often prescribed for more serious mood disorders.

They are helpful for panic disorder and acute anxiety attacks in the short term, but not over a long period of time.

People who take tranquilizers may overuse them and develop problems with withdrawal and tolerance.
