QUESTION:
People with a lactose intolerance are able to take products such as Lactaid that contain the lactase enzyme with their meals. These products can be taken in pill form. Considering the fact that the pill form of the enzyme would have to travel through the person's stomach, what special consideration would the producer of this product need to be concerned about?

Lactose Intolerance is the inability to tolerate lactose (lactose is a sugar often found in dairy products) as a result of an absence or deficiency of lactase, this enzyme is found in secretions of the small intestine and is required for digestion of lactose.
A person would have signs and symptoms of abdominal distention, cramping, pin, colic, diarrhea and excessive flatus, after ingestion of milk.
Products such as LactAid and Lactase,Dairy Ease are enzyme replacements that predigest the lactose in milk or supplement the body with lactase.
In the development of the product the manufacturer would have to take into consideration how the product could be broken down by enzymes and used accordingly in the body and the FDA weighs usually on the development of these products. I don't believe that these products work for everyone though. A  person taking these would have to take calcium and vitamin d supplements to supplement the body due to the lack of intake of these products. You take these pills that can be chewable or tablets with your first bite of food and if taken to early can be broken down by the stomach too early.
Here is a link to the website with s/s and other important information on the medication ...http://www.lactaid.com/dairy-sensitivity/lactose-health
