Reciprocal determinism is a concept proposed by Albert Bandura. Bandura suggests that when looking into what causes personality, a few factors are at play. These factors are the environment, behavior, and personal/cognitive factors. He believes these three factors mutually influence one another. It is this interplay of factors that determines our personality.

Bandura’s concept of reciprocal determinism relates to other learning theories in that the environment and behaviors are discussed. However, Bandura’s added component of cognitive factors separates him from the pure learning theories. The pure learning theories, in general, had focused only on observable behavior and the reinforcement of particular behaviors (or lack thereof) in shaping personality. These theories have been criticized for failing to account for a person’s beliefs, thoughts, expectations, and the like. Bandura’s concept of reciprocal determinism is a blend of the pure learning view with the cognitive component as well.
