Conjunctivitis is also known as pink eye. The conjunctiva is a thin layer of skin over the eye and when that layer becomes inflame or infectious then they call it conjunctivitis because of inflammation in the conjunctiva

Conjunctivitis is a condition that results from irritation or damage to the conjunctiva of the eye, most commonly from the dilation of blood vessels beneath the conjunctival surface. Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can cause this problem, or it can be caused by chemical or physical irritation.
