Emphysema is a disease wherein the alveoli of the lungs are destroyed over time, as the walls are broken down, making the spaces larger and reducing the surface area of the respiratory exchange surface. This condition is caused by exposure to either smoke or other environmental irritants over a long period of time. The damage is progressive.
