Nitric acid is a strong acid, ammonium hydroxide is a weak base, and ammonium nitrate is a soluble salt. Which of the following is the net ionic equation for the reaction?

The H+ don't cancel. The H+ from the HNO3 reacts with the OH- from the NH4OH, so it is in fact an acid base reaction...

NH4OH(aq) + HNO3(aq) -----------> NH4NO3(aq) + H2O(l)

total ionic

NH4^+(aq) + OH-(aq) + H+(aq) + NO3^-(aq) ----> NH4^+(aq) + NO3^-(aq) + H2O(l)

Cancelling out the spectator ions (NH4^+ and NO3^-) gives us the

Net ionic eqation

H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --------> H2O(l)
