Close friendships are marked by:
   - less self-enhancing behavior, such as bragging, and greater modesty
   - fewer lies except to protect others' feelings
   - seeing friends as part of the in-group ("we" instead of "I")
   - increased time spent together
   - provide mutual emotional support
   - friends and friendships are described as:
   - give-and-take relationships
   - easy to get along with   
   - does not brag
   - considerate, not short-tempered
   - spontaneous & active (in the United States, not in Japan)
   - separation causes negative emotions
   - gender differences exist in topics of conversations and in expectations
   - men expect sex from cross-gender friendships
   - women expect protection from cross-gender friendships
   - close friendships protect us from loneliness
   - close friendships are associated with longer lifespans and better health
