Natural selection is the idea that nature selects for members in a population that are best suited for survival in that particular environment; those who can best withstand environment pressures will be able to reproduce. In turn, this generates a population of species that are more fit to survive over time. For instance, cultures of bacteria that are resistant to a particular medium are more fit to survive in that medium than those that are non-resistant; in time, nature will have selected only those that can withstand the pressure; everything else dies.
