A federal report released in July 2006  begins:
"Research findings of the past decade have led to mounting concern that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations will cause changes in the ocean's carbonate chemistry system, and that those changes will affect some of the most fundamental biological and geochemical processes of the sea."  Read a summary of the report at http://www.net.org/documents/ocean_acidification_4-5-06.pdf, or go to http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/co2/co2-home.html, click on The Dangers of Ocean Acidity, and listen to the 1-hour report . Discuss the impacts of acidifying the oceans.

Acidifying the oceans could overwhelm the intricate ocean buffer system and affect all marine life. Corals, already under stress from pollution and rising temperatures, might find it more difficult to secrete calcium carbonate. They might be able to adapt to small, slow changes but may find it impossible to respond to larger, quick ones.
