Are cheap imports of consumer goods from China being subsidized by insufficient investment in environmental protection in that country? What information would you like to have in order to answer the question more fully?

American politicians and economists usually focus on the benefits in the form of a wider “choice” of consumer goods, and the cost in terms of job loss, but rarely is there a discussion of the impact of environmental degradation on the cost of imported goods. One point we addressed in the Coal Issue was the cost avoided in Chinese mines by the uncompensated deaths of at least 6,000 miners a year. If this were to happen in the US or the EU the entire industry would likely be shut down.
