The adultification of the juvenile justice system generally means that the juvenile justice system resembles its adult counterpart more now than ever. The public has demanded more punitive options for serious juvenile offenders. The demand for change occurred in the 1980s and 1990s because of concerns about increases in juvenile crime and perceptions that juveniles were becoming more violent. Both adult and juvenile offenders are much more likely to be sent to prison as the focus is on incapacitating and deterring offenders with strict punishments, and there is less investment in attempting to rehabilitate youthful offenders. If juveniles are to be treated as adults, then we probably should just eliminate the juvenile justice system, and treat all offenders—adult and juvenile—the same. This would include giving them the same rights and protections. An alternative would be to move away from the adultification of the system, and focus on providing opportunities for juveniles to change.
