The overcrowding of jails continues to be a major problem for the correctional system throughout the United States.  There are many explanations for this overcrowding, for example in 2009 there were over 86,000 state and federal inmates being held in jails.  List and describe at least three other causes for overcrowding.  What is your opinion on reducing the inmate population in the country’s jails, other than opening the door and letting them out.

The practice of giving jail sentences to offenders who are unable or unwilling to make restitution, alimony, or child- support payments has added to jail occupancy and has made the local lockup, at least partially, a debtors’ prison. Other factors conspire to keep jail populations high, including the inability of jail inmates to make bond, delays between arrest and case disposition, an overburdened criminal justice system, and what some have called “unproductive statutes” requiring that specified nonviolent offenders be jailed.
