A diploid zygote (2n) is formed at fertilisation when a haploid (n) sperm fuses with a haploid (n) egg.

Fertilization is the process, which results in a zygote.

A sperm and an egg (each haploid "n", meaning they contain half the DNA of the person they came from) come together (fertilization) to combine their genetic material and create a new organism. When they fuse, it creates a new cell called the zygote, which contains the full amount of genetic material (2n) needed to create a new organism.
