The following reaction in automobile exhaust pipes produces nitrogen dioxide, an irritating gas that helps produce "smog":

NO(g) + ½O2(g) ? NO2(g) :    ?H° = -56.6 kJ
Predict ?H° for the following reaction:

½NO(g) + ¼O2(g) ? ½NO2(g) :    ?H° = _____ kJ

The coefficients in the second reaction are each half of the coefficients in the first reaction.  Thus ?H° is half as well, so ?H° = -28.3 kJ.
