travel possible?  I watched a special on NOVA that stated that scientists have just discovered string theory.  It was basically discovered by the scientists that were smashing atoms?  Whenever they split an atom, the atomic weight of the atom would decrease always by the same ratio, the weight of an electron, I believe.  They could account for all the other neutrons, protons, and electrons, but one would be missing.  Because they did not know where it was going, it opened up a whole new theory, string theory, and the scientists believe that once it is understood where this electron disappears to, we will have the possibility of time travel.  If this happens, how will we deal with the social consequences that time travel will create?

At this time, string theory (..sometimes known as 'M' theory) is nothing more than a system of mathematical equations. The main thrust behind string theory is to unite all four of the fundamental forces of nature into a single interconnected theory (..this is called the 'grand-unified-theory, or GUT). Three of the fundamental forces have been united (..electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces) but gravity so far has refused to join the club.

At the heart of string theory lies the concept of all sub-atomic particles being composed of infinitesimal vibrating strings of energy. The frequency of the vibration for a particular string determines the kind of particle (..proton, electron, neutron, etc.,.)

Yes.  Several people around here are very familiar with string theory.  But you must be talking about something quite different since string theory has been around for 30+ years.

And yes, when atoms are split there is usually some small amount of mass that becomes energy according to
E = mc²

Have you ever wondered what may happen when your ratio of fecal mass to total body mass approaches 1?

Woo what an idea. I think you should write a Sci-Fi novel about a string theorist who crystallizes some time particles and builds a device which can travel through time. He goes far into the far future where the human race is divided into two groups: the ones above the surface and the ones below the surface who are really cannibals and... Oh wait a minute...

;-D Never mind.

It will be unraveled... and we already are- don't you get it?
