Some laboratory technicians are on-the-job trained, but you'd have to look at getting at least a vocational level diploma.

You must not limit your endeavours to laboratory type jobs. There are many opportunities in chemical production plants that give you the opportunity to work in a chemical environment without a degree. You may have to start at a mediocre level but by demonstrating enthusiasm, interest and reliability you should be able to progress into more interesting work. Most companies will then assist you to get some qualification through a technical school which qualifies you to operate complex chemical reactors etc.
