AP Biology: Why does repeated rounds of replication produce shorter and shorter DNA molecules?

My teacher was explaining this in class last week, but I don't really understand it. Can anyone explain why shorter and shorter daughter molecules are created after multiple replications of DNA? I know it has something to do with the 3 prime and 5 prime ends.
