You have to dissect the seed and to look at the embryo and to see whether there is 1 or 2 cotyledons, that looks like a heart.

It's easier with the entire plant, just looking at the leaves, if the veins are parallel, there's a high probability that it's a monocot, if they aren't, it's a dicot. Another differrence is with roots which are out of pivot for dicots and beam for monocots.

Histologically, there are no secondary tissues in monocot (derived from suber).
