Lipoproteins facilitate the transport of cholesterol in the blood, but HDLs can transport more cholesterol than LDLs. Moreover, LDLs transport cholesterol to the body's cells, whereas HDLs transport circulating cholesterol to the liver for metabolism and elimination. Thus, people with a high percentage of HDLs appear to be at lower risk for developing cholesterol-clogged arteries (a risk factor for heart disease) than people with a high percentage of LDLs.
