1. Many wastes are banned from land disposal or are treated to reduce their toxicity before being deposited.
2. The EPA has protective requirements for land disposal facilities including double liners, detection systems for substances that can leach into groundwater, and groundwater monitoring systems.
3. Hazardous waste handlers must clean up contamination from past waste management practices as well as from current activities.
4. The EPA is exploring newer cleanup technologies.
