Stanley has indigestion and is doubled over with pain. How could an antacid reduce his stomach discomfort?

It coats the stomach lining, thus protecting it from the abundance of gastric acid being secreted.  He could have a gastric ulcer too.

Antacids DO NOT coat the stomach. Antacids are weak alkali that neutralize the stomach acid reacting with the hydrogen ion. When Calcium Carbonate reacts, the carbonate ion binds two hydrogen ions and become carbonic acid then splits to form carbon dioxide and water.
Other antacids like magnesium hydroxide form water without the carbon dioxide.
By reducing the hydrogen ion concentration, the nerve ending that are sensitive to the acid are less irritated.

Sulcrafate (a starch) and heavy metals like Bismuth coat the stomach.
