With one of the hemorrhagic fevers, a viral infection, the body loses the ability to adjust K+ levels. Why does this create neurological problems?

Potassium plays a major role in maintaining the membrane potentials that are responsible for keeping the nerves working. Without the proper K+ levels, normal neurological function fails.
